The Workshop offers 4 days of courses in improvisation and intuitive music-making under the guidance of
Gareth Davis, Petra Strahovnik and Christoph Ogiermann

The workshop will take place in the Cage House and on the monastery grounds

John Cage Organ Foundation, Cage House
D-38820 Halberstadt
Germany

In May 1968, as a reaction to personal and general crisis, the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen wrote 14
text compositions that can also serve as improvisation instructions for ‘intuitive music’.

(English version: https://www.docdroid.net/sCGg4xi/aus-den-sieben-tagen-pdf#page=4 )

The practical workshop, which is open to talks and discussion, is aimed at all those interested in music,
even those with little or even no knowledge.

Instrumentalists, vocalists, performers and musical enthusiasts can expect an extensive programme with a
large practical component of improvised/intuitive music, inspired by the text compositions of the ‘Seven
Days’.

Programme

The workshop will be led by Amsterdam-based bass clarinettist Gareth Davis (wikipedia und youtube links here). Davis already has extensive experience with Stockhausen's material, which he will bring to the workshop.

The workshop will also feature talks and activities with Petra Strahovnik. She is a Slovenian composer/musician living in The Netherlands. Her work deals more and more with mental awareness and recovery and since her own experience of Long Covid (a four year process which has still not reached a conclusion) she has explored more and more the ideas of art therapy, communal workshops, performance art and how the process can in itself become a way of dealing with struggles and at the same time create.

Christoph Ogiermann, violinist, composer, improviser and one of the artistic directors of the Halberstadt
Cage Academy will also be available for the workshop

Language: English / German translation possible

Technical
requirements at the venue:

Grand piano. All other instruments must be brought by the participants themselves.

1 microphone with stand, 1 mixing desk and a 2-channel sound system are provided on site. Any additional equipment must be brought by the participants themselves.

A very slow piece of music (duration: 639 years!) has been performed in Halberstadt since 2001.

It is aninterpretation of ORGAN2/ASLSP As SLow aS Possible by the experimental American composer John
Cage. It sounds around the clock, 365 days a year, in the powerful atmosphere of the partially destroyed
medieval Burchardi Church. It has become a major centre of attraction in the spirit of John Cage's
openness.
