The John Cage Award is an internationlCompetition for the
Interpretation of Contemporary Music,
open for all instruments +, for soloists and
small chamber music groups alike
It was founded in 2008 by Ute Schalz.
Accepted are all instrumentalists and singers/voice performers. The “+“ means that they can compete as soloists as well as with chamber music formations (up to max. 4 interpreters) or electronics. The Jury decides about qualification for the competition by examining the required Video-Material.
No age limit!
Program requirements
1st Round
2 self-chosen pieces written after 1950, one of those written after 2000. Altogether not longer than 12 min.

The reportoire can not be changed after
application deadline. The order of the pieces
within the round can be changed
Improvisations and conceptual pieces are very welcome!
Diverse aesthetic and technical expression is encouraged!
Technical conditions at location:
Grand piano at both of the competition venues.
All other instruments have to be brought by the participants themselves.
1 microphone with stand, 1 mixing console and a 2-channel system available on site.
We provide you with a sound technician.
All other equipment has to be brought by the participants themselves.
We reserve the right to individually decide on the approval of technical requirements.
For any electronic requirements: Contact our sound technician immediately after approval of participation.
The participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation and meals.
Our office is happy to help with hotel contacts.
